Hunny Bunny (I’m back YAY!)

Posted in Crochet, Life with tags , , , , , , , on May 6, 2010 by sweetnightmare

This semester is almost over. Well, technically it is over but I have one last paper to write that I was given an extension on and it is one that I dread to write. In the mean while, I’ll catch ya up on things that I got done during the semester.

This little girlie bunny lovingly named, Hunny Bunny had been 2 years in the making. It started as the Lion Brand pattern ‘Best Bunny’. But I didn’t like that it was so small so I altered it as I went along and eventually it became boring and I tossed it aside while I did some other things. Poor girl was in a bin for nearly two years without her arms, tail and legs attached. One day while searching for some yarn, my now one and a half year old daughter saw it and gave it the biggest hug so I had to finish her.

So here is Reli’s pretty Hunny Bunny!

I have much planned for the summer! Lots of crafty goodness coming up. And hopefully, maybe I’ll actually get around to opening that Etsy shop too 🙂

Reclaimed!

I started my courses almost three weeks ago. Wow, it’s so much harder than I thought it was going to be. It’s only hard because I have my little BB girl to care for who still needs me so much. Oh she is just growing way too fast. I can’t hardly believe we are in October!!!! My princess is turning 1 this month! Time has just flown by. I’m so excited to celebrate it. Expect birthday party crafts soon!

So my grandmother every once in a while will send me some hand-me-down clothes from her church clothing swap. She sent me a knit sweater that had a large collar that could be buttoned up to be a turtle neck and a thin cable pattern. I didn’t like it mostly because my head is round and it just doesn’t look right on me. Turtle necks make my head look bigger and rounder. It was a Cherokee brand shirt (one of those brands from like Kmart or Walmart or something) and man was I surprised to see that it was HAND KNIT! I got super excited! Finally, I could reclaim some yarn!! Woo hoo!! I suck though, I never think until it is too late to take a before shot. It took two or three days but I got it all into balls. I should have only had 4 balls but ended up with 7 because I had some problems trying to figure out how to unravel it. It was pretty complicated.

So I am now the happy owner of reclaimed 60% cotton 40 % acrylic yarn. It’s made up of two strand of light and a darker blue. Each strand is a 2 ply so I guess it’s a 4 ply ???. I  I have 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small, and 1 small ball is purely scraps I tied together. That ball is going to be wound into a magic yarn ball I have been making with all my yarn left overs. It is mixed with different weights, fibers, colors. I don’t know what I will make with it but it will be funky! I plan to show that off the magic ball next post I have a bunch of leftovers to add to it.

Projects that I have just finished are another hoodie made with Jiffy yarn. No picture yet. I am waiting to finish another one that I am working on with Bernat Softee Chunky. I want to compare results. I also (believe it or not) just finished last week my first two basic granny square blankets. I added a picot edge to it. For one of them I had enough yarn to make a matching hat. I love it, it’s so cute. Both blankets are to be donated to my hospital next month.

In other crafts- Last month I sewed my first messenger bag. Isn’t it awesome? I love the fabric. It inspired me to make the tentacle appliques. The are carefully cut from solid fabrics and I used some heavy weight sew-in interfacing for the backing. The details are hand drawn. I love this bag so much. I use it to carry library books. I wish that I had used some thicker fabric. The entire bag is made of cotton, I would have had more use out of it had I used  some black cotton twill or something like that. Flip the flap and you’ll see I made pockets have room for a wallet, pocket notebook, and cell phone. There are also pockets for pens, pencils, knitting needles or crochet hooks! Inside the bag I made one large pocket with snaps to close it and snaps for the flap too. It’s large enough to fit my 14″ laptop so I put it there to take the pictures. I’m so proud of it!

These past few weeks have been a little hectic. I have making Precious Memory Boxes for Precious Awakening and making little crochet hats to donate to a hospital where an online friends 6 month old daughter had passed away. She asked instead of flowers for everyone to send donations for the hospital NICU/PICU. So the group that I am apart of online are all going to make donations of hats. So here are a few I have done so far. I experimented a bit with some color and lace.

SDC11996

While I was at it I also took a break to crochet a pair of little yellow Mary Jane’s for a special online friend who is expect very soon! Then two people at church have recently had babies, so there goes another two pairs.

Updating on my beautiful daughter… In one week she began pulling herself up in her crib and we discovered her first little tooth (or might I say fang! It’s sharp) has emerged! I can’t believe how big she is getting and how the time is flying by. Can’t believe she is going to be one in a few months.

So my recent big project that I chose to challenge myself with is a baby hoodie (pattern available free from Lion Brand), so it’s my first time :). I made two different ones. This first hoodie was made with Lion Brand Cupcake yarn (colorway Marshmellow yum) and the entire thing is worked up in garter stitch. It was so easy to make and worked up so quick. It did however sit in a box for a while after the pieces were done because I was afraid to sew the pieces together but when I did and sewed the buttons on it came out just perfect. I made it in a size 3-6 months. It isn’t for anyone in particular I just decided I wanted to do something I had never done before. The buttons are sooo cute. They are little lime green and blue bees. I’m really happy about how this one turned out

This next one (also available for free at Lion Brand) was made with Lion Brand Jiffy yarn in Charcole. This one I made in a size 12 months. This also worked up and this one was harder. I had to pick up stitches on the shoulders in order to knit the sleeves. I finally figured how to do that but did not make it like the pattern asks. I was supposed to make it in all garter stitch (the front and back is done in stockinette) but I didn’t really like it like that. So this is what I got after sewing it up.. The sewing job on the arms are HORRIBLE. I wish I knew how to make it look better. What really threw me off was that I had decreases at the edges of the sleeves and when I sewed it together using the mattress stitch it was soooo hard to figure out where I was supposed to be picking up the bar. SIGH, I’m too embrassed to gift this because of the way it looks. I am thinking to remove the sleeves and either redo them or just remove it and make it into a vest?? What do you think? The other change that I made is that this hoodie is not a hoodie, I just made it into a sweater as you can see. Instead I crocheted a collar. I’m happy with that, but overall it is a disaster. I think that maybe I needed to pick up more stitches for the sleeves, I don’t know 😦

The Center of My World

Woo! I have a little bit of time to myself while my BB girl and husband are sleeping in. My husband is exhausted from work and my poor BB is so sleepy after having a doctors’ visit yesterday where they gave her three shots. Every time they give her shots she sleeps a lot the day of and the next day.

I’ve been slacking lately. Usually I have a few projects going all at once but I had been focusing all my time on this lovely clutch that I may use for the wedding. It is my first cable project and my first time using super bulky yarn. I made a practice swatch with cables first since the pattern wasn’t very specific about how to make cables. The swatch came out great it was a lot . I just finished knitting the fabric for the bag and I’m not totally happy about how it came out. I was very uncomfortable knitting with the super bulky yarn. I’m not done yet I still have to sew up the ends, add lining, and some type of closure.

SOOO, totally forgot to show off my mother’s day swag! My husband let me pick what I wanted so off I went to Etsy and purchased a project bag, needle case, and tissue holder in a set from Slipped Stitches Studios ! I LOOOOVE it soooo much! The needle case hold all  my 10 1/2″ needles and all of my crochet hooks all in a neat little case. It even has space enough to hold three sets of DPN’s that I keep on their card. I use the tissue holder to keep notions in when I am on the go. I love the pattern. It’s a skull wih knitting needles as cross bones.

My mother's day gift

My mother's day gift.

Anyway, I had a nice mother’s day. I love spending time with my sweet daughter, but I had my daughter Alana (my little angel baby) in my mind through out the day. I missed her and wish so badly that she could have been with us. We went out to Central Park for a while and we took a walk, played with our BB girl. Bought dinner from one of my fav neighborhood resturants and took it home, stayed in and watched some movies. It was a pretty good day. Thanks hunny. I had Reli (BB’s nickname) wear a little dress that I bought the day I found out I was having another little girl. I bought it in faith that she would wear it one day, that was really special for me, and the best gift of all. She means everything to me.

I got around to remaking that cute crochet hat from One Skein Wonders. It came out great and Reli wore it with the dress. How cute does she look? I made it with a skein of the Knit Picks Palette yarn I purchased a while back. I sewed freshwater pearls, swarvaski crystals and glass beads on to it and added a ribbon. It’s beautiful and very luxurious- nothing but the best for her.

Baby Baby Baby

So much stuff going on since I last wrote. My little girl is starting to call for me… only when she is whiny or crying though. So cute the other night she woke up crying and I was in the kitchen and I heard her say MAMA in the middle of all the crying as I walked in the room. Melted my heart ❤ She’s growing up so fast! I’m very excited to celebrate my first Mother’s with my BB (that’s her nickname). Last Mother’s day was a sad one for me since I was supposed to have Alana.. I’ll still be thinking of her though as always.
A friend of mine had a baby on Easter Sunday, a little baby girl! So I could not help but to whip up a few small gifts for her little one. I made her two pairs of booties and a pair of slippers from the book Precious Baby Booties. It’s a favorite of mine and my go-to book when I need a pair of cute simple booties. In fact my daughters ‘Take me home’ outfit consisted of a pair Lacy booties made from this book. It was my first bootie project in which I had to fasten off, attach and weave in more than one end. They turned out great and lovely enough to grace my daughters tiny feet. All the projects are crocheted. When it comes to making a gift I always reach for the crochet hook since I am just much faster with that than with the knitting.. for now.

I used Red Heart sport in Light Raspberry for the pink ones. It was my first time  and the last time that I’ll be using that yarn. I didn’t like it’s texture very much. Red heart makes other yarns that are so much softer that I would rather use but most are worsted weights.

For these booties I decided to use a little black to make them a bit edgier. Aren’t they cute? Any baby that wears these can definietly beat up any kid on the playground!

The multi-colored pastel booties are TLC Baby and the colorway is called Naptime. I love to use this particular colorway because it is a bit thicker than their other baby yarns and makes for a nice fabric for a bootie or blanket or whatever you are making.

The washcloth pattern can be found here on Ravelry. It’s a Ravelry download so you will need to have an account on Ravelry to access it. I really like it a lot. They are so quick and easy to make that I made myself some just to finish off the two skeins of yarn I used (Lily’s Sugar and Cream in Strawberry and Peaches and Cream in Pinks and Lilacs).

I have other projects to show and talk about but I’ll save it for the next post. I don’t want to turn this into a marathon blog with a zillion pictures. ‘Til next time!

Nostalgia-O-Rama!

Man, I have been trying to write this blog for like 3 days now lol! My daughter barely gives me the time to do anything. It’s amazing that I get any projects done!

So- Oh yea! I won an Ebay auction for some various vintage knitting needles and notions. I was happy when I won but now that the package finally came in the mail, I’m in love ❤ ! Not only are they kool because they are vintage (circa 1960’s) but they are soooo awesome to knit with.. pointy points! I also got this HUGE crochet hook,  size S! My favorite needles so far are the Bernat ones, so nice and smoooooth. I think that I am going to begin collecting vintage needles. There is such a difference in the quality. I love their design and also even appreciate the packaging. Though it could all just be that I am in general nostalgic, I love all things vintage.

I also got in the mail this week my very first order from Knitpicks! Lovely yarn and needles. I purchaced 4 skeins of Merino Style wool and 4 Knit Picks Palette. I tell ya- I was pretty disappointed to have received the yarn. The colors I received were much darker than what is pictured on their website. I’ll still use it but now I don’t have the colors I wanted for a project 😦

I also purchased 101 Luxury One Skein Wonders. There are many beautiful projects. There are three baby projects I’m dying to make! One I did make- it was a cute crochet hat, it is pictured on the cover. I made it for my little girl for Easter but it turned out to be too long. However I pulled a few rows and made it into a nice hat anyway but I plan to remake it. Everyone that saw her complimented how cute the hat was (and how cute she was!)

Still creating for charity

Posted in Crochet, Free Patterns (from other sites), Knits with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 4, 2009 by sweetnightmare

Title says it all. I am still making things for the up coming impending drop off of all the Craftster Unswap donations to my website Precious Awakening. I am so grateful for my (unofficial) charity to have been chosen, you really have no idea. This has really put a fire under my bum to keep going. Sooo here are the projects that I did. It’s not much only two (and another pair of booties for my baby girl).

Here is a lovely free pattern for a crocheted simple bunting for a micro preemie baby. I used an F hook and TLC Baby yarn that I had in Powder Yellow. I think that when I make the next one I’ll use an G hook to give it a looser feel. (Sorry for the blurry pictures. My hands were shaky.)

My next project is a crochet pattern of my own. I haven’t created the pattern for it yet. It is a blanket for a small preemie-micro preemie… but this blanket doubles as burial bunting or wrap as well. So the hospital staff has the option, lets say if they are running low on blankets it can be used as one or if the family needs a burial bunting or wrap the hospital staff can turn it into one and give it to the parents. Well, I don’t know if it’s something the staff will actually do but that is the idea behind it. Again this was made using TLC baby yarn in powder yellow.

I am going to make another one. This one fans out only on the one end because my stitches are loose, but my chain (left) is tight so there’s no room. I am going to keep this one as a wrap.

Finally this project was made for my daughter, I call them Frost Glimmer booties. I knitted these from the Lion Brand pattern mentioned on my previous post. These are pretty quick to knit (now that I am a little faster). Instead of tassel on the ends of the laces I made pom poms.. or snow balls if you will 🙂 For these cute booties I decided use to still use wool-ease despite my disappointment when I knit my “Streakers”  and they fuzzed and pilled quickly. This particular skein, White/Multi has a glittery strand which I thought may help hold it together. So far it has held up quite well. Even if it does pill later on I think that because it is white it will not look as bad. Love the way they turned out.
