It’s my birthday

Posted in Life with tags , , on January 29, 2010 by sweetnightmare

.. and it’s gonna be lame. Yes I am back from a crafty hiatus, never really went on one. It was more of an internet hiatus. During my time off from school, I caught up on a few projects that I had been wanting to finish or start. I have so much to show off and no time to show it. Which brings me back to why my birthday will be lame.. My husband wants to take me out but I have tons of reading to do. My semester started last week and it is already driving me absolutely insane! I am taking World History 1-1600 BC, Digital Art and Design, Theories of Personalities and Cognitive Psychology. They are all very heavy reading courses. I have so much reading I haven’t even had a chance to begin and everything needs to be done by Monday.. ugh. So I am thinking that I should stay home. I rather be here anyway, I hate to leave my baby girl with anyone. I feel guilty when I am out without her.

So but for now I must go back to my reading. Good night. For now if you want to, check out my flickr for my handspuns.

Ugh- I’m in the home stretch for my fall semester and right now I have two thesis’s due, need to write an algebra report and take some quizes over and have some photography projects to do. It’s so over whelming. I thought I would get a break the week of Thanksgiving but it just got worse. Ugh, I can’t wait until this semester ends! I need a break so bad.

I barely have the time to do any crafts, it’s a shame, but have stayed up into the wee hours of the morning just to finish a small project or to spin. Unfortunately that leaves me exhausted. Right now my daughter, my husband and I are all very sick. What I wouldn’t give to just live under the covers all day.. sigh.

I will write soon ,I have so much to talk about too! Like going to the Smiley’s hotel yarn sale! Anyway- talk soon maybe after the holidays but hopefully before then.

I GOT A SPINNING WHEEL!!!!!!!

Posted in Spinning with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 15, 2009 by sweetnightmare

Queen Anne's Revenge!

Okay so yes I have a spinning wheel.  A beautiful piece of art, the Kromski Sonata! I LOVE it!!! It is one that can fold away but is the most beautiful one that I have seen. Most of the ones that can fold are not as pretty (no offense to anyone!!!). It comes with what looks like a book bag for a giant to put it in with plenty of room for everything you need. It has double treadles and if you are going fast enough, can be a little bit of a workout. The treadles were so smooth right out the box and setting it up was quick and easy. I also got the faster flyer and jumbo flyer but I am still waiting for that to come in the mail. I have been using it since I got it on Thursday and I think I am not doing too bad if I say so myself 😉

So when I choose the Sonata, my husband took one look at it and said, if you get that I am going to call you a pirate every time you use it lol. So if I be a yarn pirate then, me spinning wheel be me ship lol… I named her Queen Anne’s Revenge.. like Blackbeard ship but Queen for short 🙂 so now my husband plans to play a song called Queen Anne’s Revenge by a band called Flogging Molly too while I spin lol I plan to sew up a little pirate flag to hang off it somewhere.

the artsy picture

This is my first yarn on the wheel. I was told the yarn that is sticking out are called “horse tails”. I got these because sometimes when I would start or stop the wheel would begin to go counter clockwise and then I would get it going clockwise.

First Yarn

Though I have gotten my wheel now, I still use my spindles. In fact I had took my two hank of spindle spun yarns and plied them on the spindle yesterday. I’ll write about that tomorrow or Monday.

I just ordered more Shed Sheep fiber..  a little over 7 pounds!! Ack!!! I ordered a lot this time because on the wheel I am FLYING through the one pound of mill ends I bought, I am about to dive into my special fibers.

Anyway, that is all for now. I have to get to bed and to sleep!

Spindles!

It’s a been a little bit since I last wrote. I have been so busy with school. I am taking a little break to write but this will be short with mostly pictures. I have to get back to writing my thesis and a bunch of other projects.

So last I wrote, I talked about how I was ordering two spindles from Bohemia Fibers. OMG, I LOVE her spindles! Way better quality that the other spindle I bought from Etsy. I ordered a top and bottom whorl spindle kit. They are absolutely beautiful and spin so well. I got an unbeatable price too. She even put leader yarn on them both 🙂 Her spindle kits come with fiber. She asked what color I wanted, I suggested some but told her I wasn’t picky and would take anything. She was so thoughtful to send me batts in the colorway lullaby in remembrance of my daughter, so sweet of her. I had an awesome experience with her, I will buy again  from her- she is such a wonderful person 🙂

spindles

They both spin like a dream. Here is a photo of my top whorl full of.. mmmm.. handspun yarn! This one was much more consistant than my first yarn. I found it a lot easier to spin on this spindle. I got a lot more done yarn this time around. This single is just a bit thicker than the first hank of yarn so it’s a bit bigger. I’m planning to ply this one but I forgot to count how many wraps I made on my “niddy noddy”. I don’t have a niddy noddy yet so I use the knobs on my drawers lol. So I suppose that is my very own spinners tip. If you don’t own a niddy noddy just  measure the distance between two knobs, wrap the yarn around them (be sure to count your wraps! unlike me lol),  tie it up, after your yarn is stretched and dry you just unscrew one of the knobs (if your knobs don’t unscrew this won’t work). Then you make your hank 🙂

On my other spindle I spun all of the brown fiber I had. I love the way that it looks. Next time I make an order from Sheep Shed Studio I am going to ask for the brown tone mill ends.

Speaking of Shed Shed Studio, I got my order in recently! I’ve completely screwed myself now because now I have new stash! I bought one pound of black and white mill ends, one pound of turquoise #1 wool, eight ounces of specially dyed superwash in purple tones, 4 ounces of specially dyed superwash in autumn tones and a skein of hand painted originals by Brown Sheep yarn. I just wanted to try it out.

Two weeks ago was my lovely daughter’s 1st birthday. I baked her a cake for her Yo Gabba Gabba birthday party. It didn’t come out too bad considering that it was my first time really decorating a cake.DSC00248

Okay I could go on about the other stuff I am up to but I really have to get back to my work! Until next time..

Photos are all at the bottom in the gallery.

Yes it is! I can’t believe I picked up something new..a new obsession… I need more space because soon I’m going to have a new kind of stash… in addition to the yarn and the fabric lol! I have thought about doing it for months and finally, I did it. I bought my first spindle and roving. It’s pretty awesome. I got a nice little top-whorl with 4 ounces of beautiful wool fiber. Hubby doesn’t get it, and DD wants to naw on it lol I started off just using it to put twist back into that reclaimed yarn that I wrote about two or three posts back (in the photo of the mini skeins- the first one has the loosest twist, the second is better, and the last is perfect.. that one has so many tails because that was my ball of tied together scraps). It turned out pretty good. I figured out as I went along how much twist I needed and you can see the progress in my mini skeins 🙂

Today-er.. yesterday, I finally split, drafted and even if it is almost the thickness of thread lol! There are a few parts where it is thinner than I wanted and a few bumps here and there but I like it, it’s kool. I can’t wait to ply it. I think it will turn out nicer. Monday I plan to order a bottom whorl and another top-whorl spindle from Bohemia Fibers. Check out her shop, she has a lot of scrumptious items and she is just  lovely person. I also plan on getting some yummy fiber from Sheep Shed Studio.. actually the roving I have is from there. I can’t wait until Monday!!!

Oh yea! My kool-aid dyed yarn that I wrote about in my last post finally dried. It turned out beautifully. Isn’t it the most fantastic shade of red? Awesome.

Finally a decent one!

Ugh, there’s nothing I would rather be doing (aside from being with my loves) that I would rather do than knit and crochet (and now spin!!). School is driving me crazy, last week I had five papers to write and two math tests. It was insane, I barely had any family or me time.

While I read my text books I worked on another baby hoodie. A few posts back I wrote about a baby sweater I made that turned out disastrous. Well it turned out way better time, I’m so happy I concured that pattern! I added three of the cutest little Ladybug fabric buttons to it. It’s adorable, a total shame it doesn’t fit my daughter. I am planning to sell this one once I open my Etsy shop. Once again, the pattern is free and available at Lion brand.

Success! This hoodie turned out great!

I recently bought some natural wool to dye myself. I bought it from Etsy seller Mamajudes. She has a lot of beautiful hand dyed yarns, I am also lucky enough to own one of her hand dyed yarn. I wanted to dye the hank I purchased and since I have never done it before I decided to try the Kool-Aid dye method. It was fun to do, I found some good instructions from Wool Festival.com. I used the stove top method.  I used three packets of Black Cherry first but I got a gradient that went from red to a lighter shade of red so I redyed it and it turned out so much better. I found it interesting that when you leave the yarn in the pot it sucks all the color up and you are left with just clear water!

Right now the hank is drying over my heater, so I will post a picture once it’s completely dry.

My daughter is turning one next week, I am so happy! I feel accomplished, it’s hard to raise a child and this is only the first year. She is such a joy and growing like a sprout. She has six teeth already, six! She has grown so much it’s just amazing. I can’t believe how fast it’s all going by.

Reclaimed!

I started my courses almost three weeks ago. Wow, it’s so much harder than I thought it was going to be. It’s only hard because I have my little BB girl to care for who still needs me so much. Oh she is just growing way too fast. I can’t hardly believe we are in October!!!! My princess is turning 1 this month! Time has just flown by. I’m so excited to celebrate it. Expect birthday party crafts soon!

So my grandmother every once in a while will send me some hand-me-down clothes from her church clothing swap. She sent me a knit sweater that had a large collar that could be buttoned up to be a turtle neck and a thin cable pattern. I didn’t like it mostly because my head is round and it just doesn’t look right on me. Turtle necks make my head look bigger and rounder. It was a Cherokee brand shirt (one of those brands from like Kmart or Walmart or something) and man was I surprised to see that it was HAND KNIT! I got super excited! Finally, I could reclaim some yarn!! Woo hoo!! I suck though, I never think until it is too late to take a before shot. It took two or three days but I got it all into balls. I should have only had 4 balls but ended up with 7 because I had some problems trying to figure out how to unravel it. It was pretty complicated.

Reclaimed yarn

Reclaimed yarn

So I am now the happy owner of reclaimed 60% cotton 40 % acrylic yarn. It’s made up of two strand of light and a darker blue. Each strand is a 2 ply so I guess it’s a 4 ply ???. I  I have 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small, and 1 small ball is purely scraps I tied together. That ball is going to be wound into a magic yarn ball I have been making with all my yarn left overs. It is mixed with different weights, fibers, colors. I don’t know what I will make with it but it will be funky! I plan to show that off the magic ball next post I have a bunch of leftovers to add to it.

Projects that I have just finished are another hoodie made with Jiffy yarn. No picture yet. I am waiting to finish another one that I am working on with Bernat Softee Chunky. I want to compare results. I also (believe it or not) just finished last week my first two basic granny square blankets. I added a picot edge to it. For one of them I had enough yarn to make a matching hat. I love it, it’s so cute. Both blankets are to be donated to my hospital next month.

In other crafts- Last month I sewed my first messenger bag. Isn’t it awesome? I love the fabric. It inspired me to make the tentacle appliques. The are carefully cut from solid fabrics and I used some heavy weight sew-in interfacing for the backing. The details are hand drawn. I love this bag so much. I use it to carry library books. I wish that I had used some thicker fabric. The entire bag is made of cotton, I would have had more use out of it had I used  some black cotton twill or something like that. Flip the flap and you’ll see I made pockets have room for a wallet, pocket notebook, and cell phone. There are also pockets for pens, pencils, knitting needles or crochet hooks! Inside the bag I made one large pocket with snaps to close it and snaps for the flap too. It’s large enough to fit my 14″ laptop so I put it there to take the pictures. I’m so proud of it!
