These past few weeks have been a little hectic. I have making Precious Memory Boxes for Precious Awakening and making little crochet hats to donate to a hospital where an online friends 6 month old daughter had passed away. She asked instead of flowers for everyone to send donations for the hospital NICU/PICU. So the group that I am apart of online are all going to make donations of hats. So here are a few I have done so far. I experimented a bit with some color and lace.

SDC11996

While I was at it I also took a break to crochet a pair of little yellow Mary Jane’s for a special online friend who is expect very soon! Then two people at church have recently had babies, so there goes another two pairs.

Updating on my beautiful daughter… In one week she began pulling herself up in her crib and we discovered her first little tooth (or might I say fang! It’s sharp) has emerged! I can’t believe how big she is getting and how the time is flying by. Can’t believe she is going to be one in a few months.

So my recent big project that I chose to challenge myself with is a baby hoodie (pattern available free from Lion Brand), so it’s my first time :). I made two different ones. This first hoodie was made with Lion Brand Cupcake yarn (colorway Marshmellow yum) and the entire thing is worked up in garter stitch. It was so easy to make and worked up so quick. It did however sit in a box for a while after the pieces were done because I was afraid to sew the pieces together but when I did and sewed the buttons on it came out just perfect. I made it in a size 3-6 months. It isn’t for anyone in particular I just decided I wanted to do something I had never done before. The buttons are sooo cute. They are little lime green and blue bees. I’m really happy about how this one turned out

This next one (also available for free at Lion Brand) was made with Lion Brand Jiffy yarn in Charcole. This one I made in a size 12 months. This also worked up and this one was harder. I had to pick up stitches on the shoulders in order to knit the sleeves. I finally figured how to do that but did not make it like the pattern asks. I was supposed to make it in all garter stitch (the front and back is done in stockinette) but I didn’t really like it like that. So this is what I got after sewing it up.. The sewing job on the arms are HORRIBLE. I wish I knew how to make it look better. What really threw me off was that I had decreases at the edges of the sleeves and when I sewed it together using the mattress stitch it was soooo hard to figure out where I was supposed to be picking up the bar. SIGH, I’m too embrassed to gift this because of the way it looks. I am thinking to remove the sleeves and either redo them or just remove it and make it into a vest?? What do you think? The other change that I made is that this hoodie is not a hoodie, I just made it into a sweater as you can see. Instead I crocheted a collar. I’m happy with that, but overall it is a disaster. I think that maybe I needed to pick up more stitches for the sleeves, I don’t know ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Just realizing today how awesome I am! Not that I am trying to blow my head up it’s just that I can’t believe how good I have gotten at the knitting. Not only have projects been coming out well but I have moved on to experimenting! I found a really cute pattern on Ravelry, a Coffee Corset from Plum Dearly (available as a Ravelry download for free). I decided to make this because my husband is sooo bent on me having coffee with him in the morning. I am not really a big coffee drinker. I’m a tea drinker but I do LOVE my extra caramel frappachinos from StarBux! I’m also a fan of French Vanilla cappachino from 7/11 and other in and out stores like that (something my sister turned me on to). So we went to the supermarket and got some of those “cappachino” mixes. SO not the same. I kinda regret getting so much. We bought French Vanilla, Mocha, and Mayan Dark Chocolate. Oh well, so now I have all this coffee to drink and so thought while gulping that down I’d have something to pretty up my coffee cup! I thought this pattern was too easy and a bit plain for my taste after reading it so I decided to make some changes.. well a whole lot of changes! I guess I’ll have to write it up at some point, I kinda winged it as I went a long. It’s totally cute, I made this one for myself but it is definitely a project I’d make as a gift for friends and family. It’s the perfect cotton stash buster!

So, I guess one of the best things about living in New York City (well since November) is being near the Lion Brand Studio. I recently took my second trip up there with Reli. The first time she was only maybe a month or two old.. had to be a quick visit though since began to cry so I fled from the store, lol but not before purchasing a few skeins and leaving my donation for Knit One Save One. This time I thought I’d be able to have some time to enjoy the many perks of the studio, such as taking some yarn from the sample wall and knitting up some swatches. Two rows into my first swatch Reli woke up and right away wanted me to pick her up *sigh* ah, the duties of a mother ๐Ÿ™‚ I went over to the help bar and ordered a skein Baby Soft in Black since they didn’t carry it in store and on my way out purchased a skein of Cotton-ease and Microspun. So I had to show off the wall samples I picked up. I didn’t want to be greedy so I only took a few yards of each, probably only enough to make 2″ swatches.ย  I wound a sample of Cotton-ease in, Vanna’s Choice Glamour, Baby Soft, and some Microspun. I thought that the card they give you to wind-up the yarn was useful. It’s a 4″ gauge ruler and can also be used as a bookmark! I didn’t buy any of the Vanna’s Glamour but that is definitely something that I want to buy. It’s absolutely beautiful!

This past week I was contacted by a rep from S.H.A.R.E. of Utah (a division of S.H.A.R.E.) via my pregnancy and infant loss website PreciousAwakening. She asked that I donate a Precious Memory Box for an upcoming conference for professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers, etc..). Of course I said yes and out of my mind and through my paint brushes came a beautiful design. It’s one that I am very proud of, I hope whoever receives it loves it and cherishes it forever. I really worked hard on this one.ย  Not that I don’t work hard on each one I make but I’ve been in deep thought about my little baby angel. I miss her so much, I hope that she knows. I do all these things in her memory.

Woo! I have a little bit of time to myself while my BB girl and husband are sleeping in. My husband is exhausted from work and my poor BB is so sleepy after having a doctors’ visit yesterday where they gave her three shots. Every time they give her shots she sleeps a lot the day of and the next day.

I’ve been slacking lately. Usually I have a few projects going all at once but I had been focusing all my time on this lovely clutch that I may use for the wedding. It is my first cable project and my first time using super bulky yarn. I made a practice swatch with cables first since the pattern wasn’t very specific about how to make cables. The swatch came out great it was a lot . I just finished knitting the fabric for the bag and I’m not totally happy about how it came out. I was very uncomfortable knitting with the super bulky yarn. I’m not done yet I still have to sew up the ends, add lining, and some type of closure.

SOOO, totally forgot to show off my mother’s day swag! My husband let me pick what I wanted so off I went to Etsy and purchased a project bag, needle case, and tissue holder in a set from Slipped Stitches Studios ! I LOOOOVE it soooo much! The needle case hold allย  my 10 1/2″ needles and all of my crochet hooks all in a neat little case. It even has space enough to hold three sets of DPN’s that I keep on their card. I use the tissue holder to keep notions in when I am on the go. I love the pattern. It’s a skull wih knitting needles as cross bones.

My mother's day gift

My mother's day gift.

Anyway, I had a nice mother’s day. I love spending time with my sweet daughter, but I had my daughter Alana (my little angel baby) in my mind through out the day. I missed her and wish so badly that she could have been with us. We went out to Central Park for a while and we took a walk, played with our BB girl. Bought dinner from one of my fav neighborhood resturants and took it home, stayed in and watched some movies. It was a pretty good day. Thanks hunny. I had Reli (BB’s nickname) wear a little dress that I bought the day I found out I was having another little girl. I bought it in faith that she would wear it one day, that was really special for me, and the best gift of all. She means everything to me.

I got around to remaking that cute crochet hat from One Skein Wonders. It came out great and Reli wore it with the dress. How cute does she look? I made it with a skein of the Knit Picks Palette yarn I purchased a while back. I sewed freshwater pearls, swarvaski crystals and glass beads on to it and added a ribbon. It’s beautiful and very luxurious- nothing but the best for her.

Frogged Chronicles

I am really excited that my husbands cousin is getting married. We received the invite a week ago. I promptly searched online for a nice dress since my wardrobe lacks them. I found this strapless belted dress at New York & Company. Isn’t it cute? Well I thought that maybe I should make a shrug to wear with it just to make it a bit more conservative, it is a wedding after all. I chose this Ribbed Lace Bolero over at 10 Feet High. I started it on the 6th in between caring for my little BB. I tracked my progress on Ravelry..
may 9-10 (AM): 6″ done 3″ were done today. would’ve been more but had to frog some of the lace. I’m in the rhythm of it now though. 16.5″ to go
may 10-11 (AM): Too busy to do much (it’s mother’s day ๐Ÿ™‚ 8.5″ done 2.5″ today. would’ve been a little more but I had to frog the last row I did *sigh*. 14.5″ to go
may 11-12 (AM): 12″ done, 3.5″ done today even with two mistakes that I had to go back and fix. 11″ to go.
may 12: just realized that I’m not getting the twist in the lace. I don’t know why, I know I am doing it right.. but I guess I am doing something wrong.. I don’t see how because I have been carefully following the pattern. I’m stumped. I’d frog but I am so far along I may as well finish and see how it turns out.

Here you can see that in between those stitches should be twisted.

In the middle of frogging.

Yesterday by like 1 AM after BB went to sleep I decided to frog. The perfectionist in me wouldn’t letย  me go on knowing that there’s a mistake that I could fix. So I figured out I was not doing the YO the right way. I started over and had to frog it twice. An hour ago I totally gave up, I just kept on making so many mistakes. It’s so hard to go back and fix since it is lace. I didn’t give up for good though, I plan to come back to this pattern at some point. It’s a very beautiful bolero. I really wish that I could have finished it. I think that next time I will use a different yarn though. For this one I use Caron Simply Soft, in the pattern she used Lion Brand Cotton-ease and you can really see the twist in the lace pattern very well. It was not as noticeable with Simply Soft. *SIGH* I’ll probably try this one next (on Ravelry). I am going to continue searching for another just in case I can’t do this one either.

Nostalgia-O-Rama!

Man, I have been trying to write this blog for like 3 days now lol! My daughter barely gives me the time to do anything. It’s amazing that I get any projects done!

So- Oh yea! I won an Ebay auction for some various vintage knitting needles and notions. I was happy when I won but now that the package finally came in the mail, I’m in love โค ! Not only are they kool because they are vintage (circa 1960’s) but they are soooo awesome to knit with.. pointy points! I also got this HUGE crochet hook,ย  size S! My favorite needles so far are the Bernat ones, so nice and smoooooth. I think that I am going to begin collecting vintage needles. There is such a difference in the quality. I love their design and also even appreciate the packaging. Though it could all just be that I am in general nostalgic, I love all things vintage.

I also got in the mail this week my very first order from Knitpicks! Lovely yarn and needles. I purchaced 4 skeins of Merino Style wool and 4 Knit Picks Palette. I tell ya- I was pretty disappointed to have received the yarn. The colors I received were much darker than what is pictured on their website. I’ll still use it but now I don’t have the colors I wanted for a project ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I also purchased 101 Luxury One Skein Wonders. There are many beautiful projects. There are three baby projects I’m dying to make! One I did make- it was a cute crochet hat, it is pictured on the cover. I made it for my little girl for Easter but it turned out to be too long. However I pulled a few rows and made it into a nice hat anyway but I plan to remake it. Everyone that saw her complimented how cute the hat was (and how cute she was!)

Phew! It’s been a few weeks. I caught a horrible flu, and then ofcourse passed it on to my lovely daughter. Then she had a nasty rash which turned out to be severe eczema. So we are now over the sickness and her eczema breakouts are being controlled finally ๐Ÿ™‚

I made these two projects for my daughter. The dress was made from this pattern called Angel Wings Pinafore. This is the second dress I made from this pattern the first I made will be donated as part of the Precious Awakening Craftster Unswap. This one I made for my daughter but she is too big for it now. It’s totally cute though, I am going to save it for maybe a future baby. I used Caron Simply Soft (7 oz. Skein). Semi-finished project below. I haven’t sewed the buttons on yet. I added a little felt heart stitched on with some DMC floss the safety pin is for decoration. It did however hold the heart in place while I sewed it on. I would have LOVED for her to fit into this but I guess I would have to adjust the pattern to make it fit.

I finished this next project on Sunday. They are my very first pair of knitted booties. My husband calls these “Streakers”, I thought that was a really cute name for them. This is a free Lion brand pattern, the Oh Natural Booties. Instead of using Nature’s Choice yarn I decided to use Wool-ease. They looked really great after I was done, but my daughter wore them one time and they had already fuzzed and lightly pilled up ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Now I know for next time. I stitched lightening bolts on the sides. They kinda remind me of Puma sneakers.

Fair Isle Technique

Posted in Free Patterns (from other sites), Knits, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 31, 2009 by sweetnightmare

My daughter has been having late night parties in her crib, lol. I haven’t slept much these past three nights so I didn’t do much knitting. I do plan to start a new knitting project. I have four crochet projects I need to finish, three of which have been on the back burner and one that I just started.

I decided to try some color knitting but didn’t want to commit to something really big just in case it turned out to be a total disaster. So I thought that I would take a stab at some Fair Isle knitting, with no project in mind I just made a little swatch. I used Lion Brand Pound of Love in Antique White and Pastel Green and size 6 needles. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to attach color without beginning the row with the contrast color, so I made my first stripes which was a nice little extra and I found that to be very easy. I used this skull and crossbones chart (it’s free) by Toonknits.

Well- It’s not to bad for my first try. I found it hard to keep my yarn tension so there are some holes in places. The image is off center, I don’t know how I miscounted but I did. With some more practice I think I’ll be doing just fine.

Oh- look what I got for my birthday from my best friend ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t know what I will make with it yet. Welp- that’s all for now.
