Reclaimed!

I started my courses almost three weeks ago. Wow, it’s so much harder than I thought it was going to be. It’s only hard because I have my little BB girl to care for who still needs me so much. Oh she is just growing way too fast. I can’t hardly believe we are in October!!!! My princess is turning 1 this month! Time has just flown by. I’m so excited to celebrate it. Expect birthday party crafts soon!

So my grandmother every once in a while will send me some hand-me-down clothes from her church clothing swap. She sent me a knit sweater that had a large collar that could be buttoned up to be a turtle neck and a thin cable pattern. I didn’t like it mostly because my head is round and it just doesn’t look right on me. Turtle necks make my head look bigger and rounder. It was a Cherokee brand shirt (one of those brands from like Kmart or Walmart or something) and man was I surprised to see that it was HAND KNIT! I got super excited! Finally, I could reclaim some yarn!! Woo hoo!! I suck though, I never think until it is too late to take a before shot. It took two or three days but I got it all into balls. I should have only had 4 balls but ended up with 7 because I had some problems trying to figure out how to unravel it. It was pretty complicated.

So I am now the happy owner of reclaimed 60% cotton 40 % acrylic yarn. It’s made up of two strand of light and a darker blue. Each strand is a 2 ply so I guess it’s a 4 ply ???. I  I have 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small, and 1 small ball is purely scraps I tied together. That ball is going to be wound into a magic yarn ball I have been making with all my yarn left overs. It is mixed with different weights, fibers, colors. I don’t know what I will make with it but it will be funky! I plan to show that off the magic ball next post I have a bunch of leftovers to add to it.

Projects that I have just finished are another hoodie made with Jiffy yarn. No picture yet. I am waiting to finish another one that I am working on with Bernat Softee Chunky. I want to compare results. I also (believe it or not) just finished last week my first two basic granny square blankets. I added a picot edge to it. For one of them I had enough yarn to make a matching hat. I love it, it’s so cute. Both blankets are to be donated to my hospital next month.

In other crafts- Last month I sewed my first messenger bag. Isn’t it awesome? I love the fabric. It inspired me to make the tentacle appliques. The are carefully cut from solid fabrics and I used some heavy weight sew-in interfacing for the backing. The details are hand drawn. I love this bag so much. I use it to carry library books. I wish that I had used some thicker fabric. The entire bag is made of cotton, I would have had more use out of it had I used  some black cotton twill or something like that. Flip the flap and you’ll see I made pockets have room for a wallet, pocket notebook, and cell phone. There are also pockets for pens, pencils, knitting needles or crochet hooks! Inside the bag I made one large pocket with snaps to close it and snaps for the flap too. It’s large enough to fit my 14″ laptop so I put it there to take the pictures. I’m so proud of it!

So perfect that this month is sewing month. Just a few days ago I was trying my hardest to follow a pattern for a toddler jumper (even though Reli is no where near being that size yet). After hours of frustration I gave up on it. I went into my room, got an old youth-large band t-shirt and scissors. I took out my frustration on a The Mars Volta t (awesome band BTW, shirt is a bit small on me and that’s why that one got chopped), completely mutilated it lol! But oh- what an awesome out come! I made my daughter an awesome little jumper to play in. It wasn’t hard or frustrating at all, it was actually very exciting! I couldn’t wait to finish and see how it turned out. It is a little big on her but big is good! She’ll grow into it. She’s growing out of everything so fast!

I think that I might post a tut on how to make one. I have plans to butcher another t-shirt! I want to add some ribbon around the waist and maybe some tulle. Can’t wait to experiment again 🙂

Baby Baby Baby

So much stuff going on since I last wrote. My little girl is starting to call for me… only when she is whiny or crying though. So cute the other night she woke up crying and I was in the kitchen and I heard her say MAMA in the middle of all the crying as I walked in the room. Melted my heart ❤ She’s growing up so fast! I’m very excited to celebrate my first Mother’s with my BB (that’s her nickname). Last Mother’s day was a sad one for me since I was supposed to have Alana.. I’ll still be thinking of her though as always.
A friend of mine had a baby on Easter Sunday, a little baby girl! So I could not help but to whip up a few small gifts for her little one. I made her two pairs of booties and a pair of slippers from the book Precious Baby Booties. It’s a favorite of mine and my go-to book when I need a pair of cute simple booties. In fact my daughters ‘Take me home’ outfit consisted of a pair Lacy booties made from this book. It was my first bootie project in which I had to fasten off, attach and weave in more than one end. They turned out great and lovely enough to grace my daughters tiny feet. All the projects are crocheted. When it comes to making a gift I always reach for the crochet hook since I am just much faster with that than with the knitting.. for now.

I used Red Heart sport in Light Raspberry for the pink ones. It was my first time  and the last time that I’ll be using that yarn. I didn’t like it’s texture very much. Red heart makes other yarns that are so much softer that I would rather use but most are worsted weights.

For these booties I decided to use a little black to make them a bit edgier. Aren’t they cute? Any baby that wears these can definietly beat up any kid on the playground!

The multi-colored pastel booties are TLC Baby and the colorway is called Naptime. I love to use this particular colorway because it is a bit thicker than their other baby yarns and makes for a nice fabric for a bootie or blanket or whatever you are making.

The washcloth pattern can be found here on Ravelry. It’s a Ravelry download so you will need to have an account on Ravelry to access it. I really like it a lot. They are so quick and easy to make that I made myself some just to finish off the two skeins of yarn I used (Lily’s Sugar and Cream in Strawberry and Peaches and Cream in Pinks and Lilacs).

I have other projects to show and talk about but I’ll save it for the next post. I don’t want to turn this into a marathon blog with a zillion pictures. ‘Til next time!

Phew! It’s been a few weeks. I caught a horrible flu, and then ofcourse passed it on to my lovely daughter. Then she had a nasty rash which turned out to be severe eczema. So we are now over the sickness and her eczema breakouts are being controlled finally 🙂

I made these two projects for my daughter. The dress was made from this pattern called Angel Wings Pinafore. This is the second dress I made from this pattern the first I made will be donated as part of the Precious Awakening Craftster Unswap. This one I made for my daughter but she is too big for it now. It’s totally cute though, I am going to save it for maybe a future baby. I used Caron Simply Soft (7 oz. Skein). Semi-finished project below. I haven’t sewed the buttons on yet. I added a little felt heart stitched on with some DMC floss the safety pin is for decoration. It did however hold the heart in place while I sewed it on. I would have LOVED for her to fit into this but I guess I would have to adjust the pattern to make it fit.

I finished this next project on Sunday. They are my very first pair of knitted booties. My husband calls these “Streakers”, I thought that was a really cute name for them. This is a free Lion brand pattern, the Oh Natural Booties. Instead of using Nature’s Choice yarn I decided to use Wool-ease. They looked really great after I was done, but my daughter wore them one time and they had already fuzzed and lightly pilled up 😦 Now I know for next time. I stitched lightening bolts on the sides. They kinda remind me of Puma sneakers.

Anticraft !

Posted in Crochet, Patterns with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 8, 2009 by sweetnightmare

I started a project from my copy of the book, Anticraft. I chose the “Apothecary & I [Skull] Trouble” tote bag pattern, it’s actually the whole reason why I bought it. All the other patterns were just an awesome plus especially since now I am learning to knit! 🙂 I found out about the book when I stumbled upon the designers blogsite, Future Girl (link available to the right). Her website is excellent, she has tons of interesting blogs, and lots of tutorials. Who doesn’t love those? They always come in handy.

I have had the book for a while and I finally decided to make the time to make it. I’m planning to use it as a project bag. I picked out the yarns a while back. I had to choose between hot pink and this hot blue. I just really love this color and I think that hot pink and black is so common. It just didn’t talk to me. So the progress has been going okay. At first it was kinda tough. I kept ending up with extra stitches.. that hasn’t happened in a long time to me. I figured out what I was doing wrong and I have happily been crocheting away all week. I finally finished the bag portion of the project yesterday morning. I decided to give the project a break until Monday. It’s when I plan to recruit my mother to help me sew the lining. I’m really just giving her an excuse to use her new sewing machine 😉 The lining I got on sale at JoAnn’s for $4 a yard. It’s I guess a kinda faux satin with black frocked stars. Can’t wait to get started (and finished) on that. Other than the lining, I still have to make the handles and I need to embroider what I want it to say.. On the Anticraft merch page they had a few sayings on their stuff that I liked. I think I am going to have it say “Anticraftier Than Thou”. I thought that one was cute. I also liked “I Am the Anticraft”, but I liked the other one better.

Will write more later!
