Reclaimed!

I started my courses almost three weeks ago. Wow, it’s so much harder than I thought it was going to be. It’s only hard because I have my little BB girl to care for who still needs me so much. Oh she is just growing way too fast. I can’t hardly believe we are in October!!!! My princess is turning 1 this month! Time has just flown by. I’m so excited to celebrate it. Expect birthday party crafts soon!

So my grandmother every once in a while will send me some hand-me-down clothes from her church clothing swap. She sent me a knit sweater that had a large collar that could be buttoned up to be a turtle neck and a thin cable pattern. I didn’t like it mostly because my head is round and it just doesn’t look right on me. Turtle necks make my head look bigger and rounder. It was a Cherokee brand shirt (one of those brands from like Kmart or Walmart or something) and man was I surprised to see that it was HAND KNIT! I got super excited! Finally, I could reclaim some yarn!! Woo hoo!! I suck though, I never think until it is too late to take a before shot. It took two or three days but I got it all into balls. I should have only had 4 balls but ended up with 7 because I had some problems trying to figure out how to unravel it. It was pretty complicated.

Reclaimed yarn

Reclaimed yarn

So I am now the happy owner of reclaimed 60% cotton 40 % acrylic yarn. It’s made up of two strand of light and a darker blue. Each strand is a 2 ply so I guess it’s a 4 ply ???. I  I have 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small, and 1 small ball is purely scraps I tied together. That ball is going to be wound into a magic yarn ball I have been making with all my yarn left overs. It is mixed with different weights, fibers, colors. I don’t know what I will make with it but it will be funky! I plan to show that off the magic ball next post I have a bunch of leftovers to add to it.

Projects that I have just finished are another hoodie made with Jiffy yarn. No picture yet. I am waiting to finish another one that I am working on with Bernat Softee Chunky. I want to compare results. I also (believe it or not) just finished last week my first two basic granny square blankets. I added a picot edge to it. For one of them I had enough yarn to make a matching hat. I love it, it’s so cute. Both blankets are to be donated to my hospital next month.

In other crafts- Last month I sewed my first messenger bag. Isn’t it awesome? I love the fabric. It inspired me to make the tentacle appliques. The are carefully cut from solid fabrics and I used some heavy weight sew-in interfacing for the backing. The details are hand drawn. I love this bag so much. I use it to carry library books. I wish that I had used some thicker fabric. The entire bag is made of cotton, I would have had more use out of it had I used  some black cotton twill or something like that. Flip the flap and you’ll see I made pockets have room for a wallet, pocket notebook, and cell phone. There are also pockets for pens, pencils, knitting needles or crochet hooks! Inside the bag I made one large pocket with snaps to close it and snaps for the flap too. It’s large enough to fit my 14″ laptop so I put it there to take the pictures. I’m so proud of it!

So I start the Fall semester in a few weeks and already school is getting into my craft time. I have been preparing for.. getting my textbooks, taking orientation, getting supplies, ugh. I can’t wait to start though!

The last thing that I knitted was a bolero made from Lily’s Sugar and Cream cotton and Lion Brand cotton in Black. I had made it for myself . It was the same pattern that I used to make my daughters bolero (blog entry). When I sewed it up it was big on me and turned didn’t look that great on me. It made my boobs look even bigger than they already are! LOL so I’ll be searching for another pattern to make, I want to have one (that fits) in time for my wedding anniversary next month. I ended up having to gift the bolero, I decided to give it to my grandmother in Puerto Rico. My mom, as I write, is currently visiting her. I wish I could have gone so Abulea could have met my daughter. I forgot to take a picture of the finished project. I asked my mom to take a picture of my Abulea wearing it so I hope she remembers.

Since I last wrote I have picked up a new (well not really new) craft. I am sewing! I haven’t sewn in years! Back  in Middle School I used to make little pillows and I used to paint Lion King characters on them and sell it at school. It was my first business and with my earnings I purchased my first pair of roller blades! Speaking of selling things, I am planning to open an Etsy shop soon 🙂 I have a bunch of stuff I that I’ve made and plan to sell. Can’t wait, I’m not ready yet. I am planning to attend an Etsy workshop that the Lion Brand Studio will be hosting next month. I hope to get some good tips!

I have been also doing a little bit of embroidery. Here is a pin cushion that I made. I got the pattern and idea from Urbanthreads.com It came out pretty good!

Made of felt. Design from UrbanThreads.

I have made a few sewn projects from the book called Bending the Rules of Sewing. I LOVE this book! The patterns are simple but so so cute. The only thing I don’t like is that there is so much errata in it. Luckily I came across the Flickr group and found all the corrections there (though it was too late for two projects). So far my favorite pattern is the Charming Hand Bag. It was the first pattern I made and it turned out decent but there are plenty of hidden mistakes. I also made the No Cash wallet. The concept for that one is so cute.

I also made a little box bag, my new knitting project tote. Isn’t it cute? (see below in the gallery feature I am trying out) That’s another well hidden disaster lol but hey it works and it’s adorable. This is from a free pattern called Perfect Box Pouch. Lucky me! I was able to find the same fabric that she used. I fell in love with it when I saw it, too cute! Even cuter in pink!

I have been going fabric crazy! It’s my new obsession, as if I needed another one. So in addition to the huge yarn stash, I am working on the fabric stash lol

Well I am still crocheting and knitting my little hats for charity. Donation day (on Alana’s Birthday/Angel day) is coming soon. Can’t believe it will be two year since I lost Alana.

Just realizing that I love to make little booties. I guess now that I have my BB girl it’s my right as a mother. I have someone to make them for and I enjoy doing it. I have been challenging myself my knitting some up. It was harder than I thought but it didn’t have to be. I should have just read it more carefully. I decided to make this pair by Patons. I thought they were so cute. I wanted to make them bigger so I made them on size 6 needles. I used TLC White Sparkles. I have had this yarn for a while. My husband loves it so much and has been asking me for a long time to make something for her with it. Because I didn’t understand the instructions this is what happened lol (my very helpful hubby holds the work while I take the picture)!

Apparently there was a point where I was supposed to turn but instead
it said right side facing you and I didn’t understand that all they
wanted me to do was turn the work. It took days for me to figure that
out lol. Here are the booties finished!! I like them they are cute and extra big so they will fit Reli for an extra long time.

I also made this pair of booties Pirate Booties from this blog (pattern download here). I had started these way before I started the Patons booties. I had been dying to make these for months! I started the project and got stuck in the same spot as the Patons. But after completing those I came back to these to finish. I wanted to make these with Simply Soft because again I wanted them to be big enough to fit her for a long time and also went one needle size up but when I went back to the project it was weeks later and so my tension was not the same. The result? Two different size booties. One is HUGE! I guess not too bad I’ll just have to make a match pair for each one. One pair for now and one for later. Another problem I had was with the sole. I don’t have a picture of it but it made my daughters feet look like she had feet like Bobby from Bobby’s World lol (a cartoon from the early 90’s). I frogged the sole and knitted them in the round instead. They turned out so much better the way I did it. Lastly, Instead of doing a skull and cross bones made a space invader on each bootie. I thought it would be so cute and they are.

I just wanted to show this off too. I made this a while back. It’s a little bolero for my little girl. I got the lace pattern from a book. I am not sure what book it was though. I wrote about this lace pattern in a previous blog when I first made a swatch. It came out so nicely. However it was a bit tight. I think I’ll have to make another a few inches bigger. I also have to adjust the edging and make it a bit longer.

Oh one more thing. Two weekends ago we took our daughter to SummerStage at Central Park to see DJ Lance and Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba! I can’t explain how much she loves this show, it really amazes me. The night before I decided that I wanted to make her a shirt to wear. So I got a picture of Muno doing what he loves to do, eat noodles! I drew his picture cut the pieces out and used them as a pattern.

I cut the pieces out of felt and sewed them on to a plain pink t-shirt. Then had to embroider the chopsticks. That didn’t come out too well. I tried to put the shirt in an embroidery hoop but it wouldn’t fit 😦 So they are not as straight as I’d like. As the noodles I used a small piece of cream colored ribbon that I sewed on. I’m happy with the way it turned out. I would’ve loooove to show her wearing the shirt at the show but ofcourse the camera battery died while we were there. I only have one picture of her from that day. My husband is holding her when she fell asleep while standing online to get in.

❤ My loves.

Just realizing today how awesome I am! Not that I am trying to blow my head up it’s just that I can’t believe how good I have gotten at the knitting. Not only have projects been coming out well but I have moved on to experimenting! I found a really cute pattern on Ravelry, a Coffee Corset from Plum Dearly (available as a Ravelry download for free). I decided to make this because my husband is sooo bent on me having coffee with him in the morning. I am not really a big coffee drinker. I’m a tea drinker but I do LOVE my extra caramel frappachinos from StarBux! I’m also a fan of French Vanilla cappachino from 7/11 and other in and out stores like that (something my sister turned me on to). So we went to the supermarket and got some of those “cappachino” mixes. SO not the same. I kinda regret getting so much. We bought French Vanilla, Mocha, and Mayan Dark Chocolate. Oh well, so now I have all this coffee to drink and so thought while gulping that down I’d have something to pretty up my coffee cup! I thought this pattern was too easy and a bit plain for my taste after reading it so I decided to make some changes.. well a whole lot of changes! I guess I’ll have to write it up at some point, I kinda winged it as I went a long. It’s totally cute, I made this one for myself but it is definitely a project I’d make as a gift for friends and family. It’s the perfect cotton stash buster!

So, I guess one of the best things about living in New York City (well since November) is being near the Lion Brand Studio. I recently took my second trip up there with Reli. The first time she was only maybe a month or two old.. had to be a quick visit though since began to cry so I fled from the store, lol but not before purchasing a few skeins and leaving my donation for Knit One Save One. This time I thought I’d be able to have some time to enjoy the many perks of the studio, such as taking some yarn from the sample wall and knitting up some swatches. Two rows into my first swatch Reli woke up and right away wanted me to pick her up *sigh* ah, the duties of a mother 🙂 I went over to the help bar and ordered a skein Baby Soft in Black since they didn’t carry it in store and on my way out purchased a skein of Cotton-ease and Microspun. So I had to show off the wall samples I picked up. I didn’t want to be greedy so I only took a few yards of each, probably only enough to make 2″ swatches.  I wound a sample of Cotton-ease in, Vanna’s Choice Glamour, Baby Soft, and some Microspun. I thought that the card they give you to wind-up the yarn was useful. It’s a 4″ gauge ruler and can also be used as a bookmark! I didn’t buy any of the Vanna’s Glamour but that is definitely something that I want to buy. It’s absolutely beautiful!

This past week I was contacted by a rep from S.H.A.R.E. of Utah (a division of S.H.A.R.E.) via my pregnancy and infant loss website PreciousAwakening. She asked that I donate a Precious Memory Box for an upcoming conference for professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers, etc..). Of course I said yes and out of my mind and through my paint brushes came a beautiful design. It’s one that I am very proud of, I hope whoever receives it loves it and cherishes it forever. I really worked hard on this one.  Not that I don’t work hard on each one I make but I’ve been in deep thought about my little baby angel. I miss her so much, I hope that she knows. I do all these things in her memory.

Woo! I have a little bit of time to myself while my BB girl and husband are sleeping in. My husband is exhausted from work and my poor BB is so sleepy after having a doctors’ visit yesterday where they gave her three shots. Every time they give her shots she sleeps a lot the day of and the next day.

I’ve been slacking lately. Usually I have a few projects going all at once but I had been focusing all my time on this lovely clutch that I may use for the wedding. It is my first cable project and my first time using super bulky yarn. I made a practice swatch with cables first since the pattern wasn’t very specific about how to make cables. The swatch came out great it was a lot . I just finished knitting the fabric for the bag and I’m not totally happy about how it came out. I was very uncomfortable knitting with the super bulky yarn. I’m not done yet I still have to sew up the ends, add lining, and some type of closure.

SOOO, totally forgot to show off my mother’s day swag! My husband let me pick what I wanted so off I went to Etsy and purchased a project bag, needle case, and tissue holder in a set from Slipped Stitches Studios ! I LOOOOVE it soooo much! The needle case hold all  my 10 1/2″ needles and all of my crochet hooks all in a neat little case. It even has space enough to hold three sets of DPN’s that I keep on their card. I use the tissue holder to keep notions in when I am on the go. I love the pattern. It’s a skull wih knitting needles as cross bones.

My mother's day gift

My mother's day gift.

Anyway, I had a nice mother’s day. I love spending time with my sweet daughter, but I had my daughter Alana (my little angel baby) in my mind through out the day. I missed her and wish so badly that she could have been with us. We went out to Central Park for a while and we took a walk, played with our BB girl. Bought dinner from one of my fav neighborhood resturants and took it home, stayed in and watched some movies. It was a pretty good day. Thanks hunny. I had Reli (BB’s nickname) wear a little dress that I bought the day I found out I was having another little girl. I bought it in faith that she would wear it one day, that was really special for me, and the best gift of all. She means everything to me.

I got around to remaking that cute crochet hat from One Skein Wonders. It came out great and Reli wore it with the dress. How cute does she look? I made it with a skein of the Knit Picks Palette yarn I purchased a while back. I sewed freshwater pearls, swarvaski crystals and glass beads on to it and added a ribbon. It’s beautiful and very luxurious- nothing but the best for her.

Frogged Chronicles

Posted in Free Patterns (from other sites), Knits, Life with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 15, 2009 by sweetnightmare

I am really excited that my husbands cousin is getting married. We received the invite a week ago. I promptly searched online for a nice dress since my wardrobe lacks them. I found this strapless belted dress at New York & Company. Isn’t it cute? Well I thought that maybe I should make a shrug to wear with it just to make it a bit more conservative, it is a wedding after all. I chose this Ribbed Lace Bolero over at 10 Feet High. I started it on the 6th in between caring for my little BB. I tracked my progress on Ravelry..
may 9-10 (AM): 6″ done 3″ were done today. would’ve been more but had to frog some of the lace. I’m in the rhythm of it now though. 16.5″ to go
may 10-11 (AM): Too busy to do much (it’s mother’s day 🙂 8.5″ done 2.5″ today. would’ve been a little more but I had to frog the last row I did *sigh*. 14.5″ to go
may 11-12 (AM): 12″ done, 3.5″ done today even with two mistakes that I had to go back and fix. 11″ to go.
may 12: just realized that I’m not getting the twist in the lace. I don’t know why, I know I am doing it right.. but I guess I am doing something wrong.. I don’t see how because I have been carefully following the pattern. I’m stumped. I’d frog but I am so far along I may as well finish and see how it turns out.

Here you can see that in between those stitches should be twisted.

In the middle of frogging.

Yesterday by like 1 AM after BB went to sleep I decided to frog. The perfectionist in me wouldn’t let  me go on knowing that there’s a mistake that I could fix. So I figured out I was not doing the YO the right way. I started over and had to frog it twice. An hour ago I totally gave up, I just kept on making so many mistakes. It’s so hard to go back and fix since it is lace. I didn’t give up for good though, I plan to come back to this pattern at some point. It’s a very beautiful bolero. I really wish that I could have finished it. I think that next time I will use a different yarn though. For this one I use Caron Simply Soft, in the pattern she used Lion Brand Cotton-ease and you can really see the twist in the lace pattern very well. It was not as noticeable with Simply Soft. *SIGH* I’ll probably try this one next (on Ravelry). I am going to continue searching for another just in case I can’t do this one either.

Baby Baby Baby

Posted in Crochet, Free Patterns (from other sites), Life, Patterns with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 9, 2009 by sweetnightmare

So much stuff going on since I last wrote. My little girl is starting to call for me… only when she is whiny or crying though. So cute the other night she woke up crying and I was in the kitchen and I heard her say MAMA in the middle of all the crying as I walked in the room. Melted my heart ❤ She’s growing up so fast! I’m very excited to celebrate my first Mother’s with my BB (that’s her nickname). Last Mother’s day was a sad one for me since I was supposed to have Alana.. I’ll still be thinking of her though as always.
A friend of mine had a baby on Easter Sunday, a little baby girl! So I could not help but to whip up a few small gifts for her little one. I made her two pairs of booties and a pair of slippers from the book Precious Baby Booties. It’s a favorite of mine and my go-to book when I need a pair of cute simple booties. In fact my daughters ‘Take me home’ outfit consisted of a pair Lacy booties made from this book. It was my first bootie project in which I had to fasten off, attach and weave in more than one end. They turned out great and lovely enough to grace my daughters tiny feet. All the projects are crocheted. When it comes to making a gift I always reach for the crochet hook since I am just much faster with that than with the knitting.. for now.

I used Red Heart sport in Light Raspberry for the pink ones. It was my first time  and the last time that I’ll be using that yarn. I didn’t like it’s texture very much. Red heart makes other yarns that are so much softer that I would rather use but most are worsted weights.

For these booties I decided to use a little black to make them a bit edgier. Aren’t they cute? Any baby that wears these can definietly beat up any kid on the playground!

The multi-colored pastel booties are TLC Baby and the colorway is called Naptime. I love to use this particular colorway because it is a bit thicker than their other baby yarns and makes for a nice fabric for a bootie or blanket or whatever you are making.

The washcloth pattern can be found here on Ravelry. It’s a Ravelry download so you will need to have an account on Ravelry to access it. I really like it a lot. They are so quick and easy to make that I made myself some just to finish off the two skeins of yarn I used (Lily’s Sugar and Cream in Strawberry and Peaches and Cream in Pinks and Lilacs).

I have other projects to show and talk about but I’ll save it for the next post. I don’t want to turn this into a marathon blog with a zillion pictures. ‘Til next time!
